Pixie Update

Thursday night was a rough night for Pixie. She was pretty out of it when we went to visit her, but she did raise her head and acknowledged that we were there. She had three IVs going and a jingle bell on her neck to alert the nurses if she were to have any seizures. Fortunately, she did not but they had to closely monitor her blood sugars which didn’t improve until she started eating well.

Amazingly, she did great throughout the day and was able to discharge from the hospital on Friday night to a wonderful foster home, the same person that adopted our special needs heartworm positve senior boy Jedi. She will be on a LOT of medicine for the next six weeks and we know she is in the best hands. We are extremely grateful to have someone that will be able to watch her closely while she recovers. Stay tuned for more updates on our precious girl!

Pixie underwent an "external liver shunt repair" on August 27th, 2026 at Veterinary Care and Specialty Group (VCSG) after a CT revealed this congenital issue. Her surgeon specializes in these kinds of conditions and travels all of the US to perform them. A liver shunt is a serious condition that prevents her liver from filtering her blood and thus causing toxins to be released right in to her body. Her symptoms were frequent thirst, urination, and eventually weight loss and weakness causing her to stagger in the last couple of weeks. Now that surgery is complete, she can focus on healing, getting stronger, and just being a dog!

If you are able, please donate towards Pixie's medical costs. We spent over $3000 diagnosing the issue and now over $7000 for the surgery itself which is a significant cost for our small shelter. We are very thankful that we could help her and hope to continue being able to help other with Special Needs.
